Delta Alliance Newsletter July 2010  

This issue of the Delta Alliance newsletter informs you about the latest developments of your international delta network. During our strategy session in Shanghai on June 7, the mission of Delta Alliance was confirmed. We would like to encourage you to visit our online platform 'delta-zones.com' and to fill in our questionnaire if you did not already do so. Further, Mr. Will Travis, Executive Director of the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission in California, shares the challenges of working in this delta region. Some major delta events are coming up, about which you can read about and register for. While reading this issue we hope you will be encouraged to participate in establishing the worldwide delta network!

World Estuary Alliance Conference 2010

The First World Estuary Alliance Conference welcomed to Shanghai dozens of people working for the preservation and restoration of estuaries around the world. The conference marked the launch of the World Estuary Alliance, a WWF initiative based in Shanghai that aims to raise awareness of the economic and ecological value of healthy estuaries and to stimulate exchange of knowledge and implementation of best practices.

Delta Alliance Mission confirmed

During the World Estuary Alliance Conference, Delta Alliance hosted a strategy session on June 7 to define its mission and further strategy. With input from people working in deltas around the world, a mission for Delta Alliance was confirmed: to improve the resilience of deltas worldwide. To support this ambitious mission the Delta Alliance Resilience Strategy has been created, which provides a framework for activities.

‘We all face the same challenges, the only differences are in our perspectives’

Interview with Mr. Will Travis, Executive Director of the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission in California, United States of America. 

‘Many people in the USA are not aware how big the climate change and sea level rise challenge is’, thus Will Travis. ‘Some of them say they don’t believe in global warming, as if it’s a religion instead of a scientific fact. That is a big challenge for us. Many of our efforts therefore are focused on informing and trying to involve the public in our work.’

Delta Alliance and World Estuary Alliance are developing the new online knowledge exchange platform ‘ delta-zones.com’ which aims to be a gathering place for people involved in estuary and delta issues. We invite you to register to this platform, upload your profile, and get connected with others. Any comments on the platform are very welcome and can be sent to the Delta Alliance Secretariat.

Registration open for 'Deltas in Times of Climate Change' conference

The conference ‘Deltas in Times of Climate Change’ will be held in Rotterdam, from 29 September- 1 October 2010. Delta Alliance will be hosting sessions including a showcase of cooperation between deltas, an awards ceremony for the DeltaCompetition 2010, and a celebration of the launch of Delta Alliance. You are cordially invited to join this conference to discuss the most recent scientific insights, to share best practices and to create effective international networks. Registration for this conference is now open.

Delta Alliance Questionnaire

The first results of the Delta Alliance questionnaire were used during the strategy session in Shanghai. We can however still use the input of people who did not answer the questions yet, as the Delta Alliance network has to be built by people from delta areas around the world. Filling in this questionnaire will take no more than 10 minutes, and provide us with valuable input in further developing the network!

 

Indonesian Wing scoping workshop on June 29-30, 2010

On July 29-30, 2010, the scoping workshop under Delta Alliance for the Indonesian wing is organized. This scoping workshop elaborates upon an earlier round table and kick-off meeting in Indonesia with stakeholders representing 25 or more institutions and individuals in 2009.

National Coordinating Agency for Surveys and Mapping of Indonesia in cooperation with University of Diponegoro, PUSPICS - University of Gadjah Mada, International Center for Interdisciplinary and Advanced Research (ICIAR-LIPI) and Delta Alliance International invite you to join us and participate in the Indonesian Delta Forum 2010 to be held in Semarang, Central Java, October 21st – 22nd, 2010.

Delta Alliance Dutch Wing Workshop

On April 22, 2010 the Dutch wing organized a kick-off workshop under Delta Alliance. Representatives from various organizations attended the workshop. After an introduction of Delta Alliance the workshop participants gave their opinion about the development of the international network during an Electronic Board Room Session.
